Course description
OCLC Western’s Metadata Services Manager presents a workflow-centered seminar about technical services to help managers take better advantage of all the cataloging service options included in the OCLC subscription pricing. The most cost-effective strategies for cataloging workflow rely—more than ever—on efficiently blending a variety of technological resources with judicious use of your skilled labor.
This new seminar will focus on the factors that drive your workflow—whether they are your need for high quality bibliographic records, implementation of labor efficiencies, requirement for a more rapid throughput of new materials, building a greater reliance on machine interfaces, or the value you want to derive from your local customizations. We will discuss successful strategies to achieve your goals and a broad range of options that have little to zero OCLC cost impact.
Perfect for
Managers, supervisors, original catalogers, and technical staff in acquisitions or cataloging units, as well as leaders of joint departments. Registration is limited to ensure individual questions can be addressed.
What you will learn
- How to compare OCLC interfaces for your workflow preference (e.g., OCLC Connexion, OCLC CatExpress, Batchloading (of WorldCat or non-OCLC-derived records), Z39.50 (of WorldCat or non-OCLC-derived records)
- How to evaluate the investment in your current integrated library systems (ILS), such as its Z39.50 search/download features, or its MARC editing module, with OCLC Connexion or offline features to make the most appropriate choice/s
- How to help records from non-OCLC sources become fully searchable in Open WorldCat <http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/>
- Alternative (and free!) OCLC automated cataloging services that are labor savers and how they provide benefits you may want (e.g., PromptCat, Bib Notification, Accessions List)
- Alternative (fee-based) OCLC cataloging services that partner with other vendors
- Review of the quality control practices that provide on-going OCLC credits (e.g., original records, adding missing classification numbers or correcting broken URLs)
- How to measure your own library’s productivity against the benchmarks of peer libraries
The first two seminars in this series for managers were, "The Book stops Here" and/or "OCLC Tookit for Technical Services Managers". This third seminar is completely updated with new material. This seminar may be taken without having attended either of the earlier versions.
Look for this seminar to be scheduled in a major city in the western region at least every other year. If you want to know how soon it will be scheduled near you, please send a message to western@oclc.org. If your facility is interested in getting a free seat by hosting, please contact Brian Harrison at 909-937-3300 for more details.
